Icheb is a Brunali male who was assimilated by the Borg. In 2376 a virus killed all the adult drones on the cube he was on. Despite being the first of the young drones to emerge from the maturation chambers he was designated "second" as he could not lead the others.
Voyager and Icheb crossed paths when the small collective of drones attempted to get the ship's deflector dish in order to make contact with the collective. That plan failed and Icheb and the other children joined the Voyager crew, receiving an education of sorts from Seven of Nine
Icheb soon showed a keen interest in astrometrics and began working with Seven in the new astrometrics lab. His hopes for a permanent post were dashed when Voyager came across his home planet and found that his parents were still living. Plans were made for a reluctant Icheb to return to them on a permanent basis. The transition was difficult but eventually he was left with his parents Leucon and Yifay when Voyager left orbit.
Once Voyager left however the explanation behind Icheb's assimilation into the collective became clear. The planet, low in technology and therefore useless to the Borg, had an extra defense. Certain children, including Icheb, were born with a particular pathogen designed to infect and kill the Borg. Leucon and Yifay sent him off once again, deliberately seeking out a Borg Cube. Thanfully, Voyager was able to rescue the young man.
Icheb came back on board Voyager and became a valuable member of the crew. When the other former Borg children departed a year later, having found homes, he stayed on, deciding to apply to Starfleet Academy. He asked Seven of Nine to ask the captain if he could take the entrance exam but plans were delayed when Seven's cortical node began to fail. Icheb offered up his own, believing that he could function without it.
Icheb has managed to adapt well to life outside of the Borg collective. He made fast friends with Q's son, Jr., when the young omnipotent being was sent to his "Auntie Kathy" for education. He has also begun to experience romantic feelings towards members of the opposite sex, such as when he mistook B'Elanna's attempts of friendship for something else.
In 2378, Voyager finally returned to the Alpha Quadrant. At that time it is believed that Icheb would make his home on Earth and attend Starfleet Academy.
